Most people brace for the first few days of quitting and then feel caught off guard by week two, or week five, when something is still off. Withdrawal does not end the moment nicotine leaves your body. It fades in stages, and knowing the shape of those stages makes each one easier to sit through.
Week 1. This is the sharpest physical stretch. Cravings are frequent and can feel intense, often tied to old routines like coffee, driving, or finishing a meal. Sleep is commonly disrupted. Irritability is common and usually not about anything in particular.
Week 2. Cravings are typically less constant, but they can still hit hard when they show up, often triggered by stress or a specific place rather than the clock. Concentration may still feel foggy. This is a common week for a slip, mostly because people expect to feel back to normal already and get discouraged when they are not.
Weeks 3 to 4. This is usually where things start to feel different in a real way. Cravings become shorter and further apart. Mood tends to stabilize. Sleep often improves, though not always all the way back to where it was before.
Weeks 5 to 8. Physical withdrawal has mostly finished its work by now. What is left is more about habit and situation than chemistry, things like what to do with your hands during a stressful call, or what replaces a smoke break. That is a different kind of challenge, and it responds to different tools than the early weeks did.
Beyond week 8. Cravings can still show up occasionally, usually tied to a specific trigger rather than a general pull. They tend to be brief and much easier to ride out than anything in the first month.
If you are further along than you expected to be and still have a hard day, that does not mean something went wrong. Withdrawal is not a straight line down. It is normal for a rough day to show up out of nowhere weeks in, even after a long stretch of feeling fine.
The pattern that matters is the overall direction, not any single day. Almost everyone's hardest days are behind them by the time they reach week four.
